Upcoming Gaming And eSport Events

If you are a hardcore game fanatic, there’s every chance that the unforgiving pandemic of last year was both a blessing and a bummer for your fun and entertainment. While the stay-at-home culture—as well as the lockdowns that enforced them—meant more screen time, the calendars that told us when which gaming or esports event would hold, went into overdrive.

Traditionally, E3 is the go-to platform for the gaming world’s biggest announcements. But because of multiple event cancellations from last year, it has become harder for the die-harders to keep track of the events in which they’d like to partake. The trend has all but died in 2021; which means there’s a gamer or plucky esports loyalist out there looking to make the most of what is in store for them.

Say no more. We have compiled a list of some of the most anticipated gaming and esports events—the majority of which have been slated for 2022. Because it is a relatively endless list, we’ll keep updating as we learn more. For now, these are by far the biggest bangs yet on the block.

The Game Awards 2021 - December 9th, 2021

If you know Geoff Keighley—a Canadian video game journalist and TV presenter—then there’s every reason to believe that you are awaiting this year’s edition of The Game Awards with unusually high expectations. Keighley has already confirmed that the event is making a big comeback this December; this time with a face-to-face conclave hosted at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. For enthusiasts who won’t be in La-La Land for the event, no worries; it will be aired and streamlined online, worldwide.

The Game Awards assembles a diversity of game developers, gamers, and well-known figures in the pop culture universe to recognize and eulogize gaming as the most challenging, immersive, and inspiring endeavor in the entertainment universe. The event strives to shed the spotlight on the actors that better the wellbeing of the gaming community and project the voices representing the future of the turf. It’s one of the best platforms to see who’s shaking what in the gaming industry, literally.

EGX Birmingham - March 3rd-5th, 2022

How about a chance to meet a couple of AAA publishers? EGX only just wrapped up its 2021 edition, but the definite dates—as well as the changes for the next big showdown—have been released. Though the last event was held in London, come October, EGX will be hosted in Birmingham as it looks to expand its footprints. Also, between September 22nd and 25th, 2022, EGX will head back to London for the year’s final redaction.

Remaining the event to EGX Birmingham is a play to expand the Rezzed Zone. As such, the event will go beyond offering its staple indie exhibitions to let AAA studios set up and tease into some of their Spring releases. For 2022, EGX wants to make the player experience a central theme—chiefly by enabling game developers and wackadoodles to come together to celebrate titles and create indelible memories. This year’s edition marked EGX’s first physical event since 2019, so there’s bound to be more frenzy in 2022.

London Games Festival - April 1-10, 2022

For a 2022 return, the much-sought-after London Games Festival will include several events such as the W.A.S.D and The BAFTA Games Awards. The event will feature brand new titles from different parts of the world, all of which are meticulously handpicked by the LGF team to be showcased all through the festivities. For example, ENSEMBLE, an exhibition focused on United Kingdom-based Black, Asian and minority ethnic titles will return with eight additional voices.

Games London wants to make London the world’s gaming capital, and the London Games Festival is the platform through which it wants to achieve that. In fact, this Festival is the planet’s largest celebration of video games and interactive entertainment. In 2019 alone, it has 40 events across London, hosted more than 12 cumulative days of activities, and over 400 playable games. They switched online in 2020 due to the pandemic but still facilitated over 1,000 virtual meets.

W.A.S.D - April 7-9, 2022

As another addition to the United Kingdom’s entertainment industry, a new event is hitting the ground running next year. Under the auspices of the just-talked-about London Games Festival for 2022, W.A.S.D will be bringing a well-mixed host of game developers and publishers at the London Tobacco Dock. If you attend this mega conclave, you’d have access to a wide array of high-end games, meet the oddest content creators of your wildest dreams and hear from the experts themselves.

Should you happen to be on the lookout for a meaningful career in the games industry, W.A.S.D is bound to set you on the right path. According to the organizers, there would be lots of opportunities to take advantage of at the gathering, such as getting professional advice from developers and asking publishers a few questions. Meanwhile, W.A.S.D is hosting the Games Finance Market’s live meets—though more details regarding this vertical would be communicated by next year.

League Of Legends: World Championship

As far as player bases are concerned, League of Legends and DOTA 2 have always been the two biggest rivals—majorly due to their similarity in core design. However, much consensus exists on the claim that DOTA 2 players sit on higher gameplay skill caps. Be as it may, LOL competitions are not any less impressive than they’ve showcased to be and watching pro players go head to head never falls short of an exhilarating experience. That is why the League of Legends World Championship is one of the biggest esports events ever.

Riot Games has long confirmed that the 2022 League Of Nations World Championship would be held across four North American cities. In the past few years, the group, quarter-final, semi-final and finale stages of the competition have all been hosted across four cities. The last time North America hosted an LOL championship was in 2016, as matches were held in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. Now moving away from China where it was hosted last year due to the pandemic, fingers are crossed.

The International

The International is an event so big that many argue it is the biggest of its kind in the esports space. For the 2021 reboot, the prize pool of the conclave grossed a whopping 4 million dollars. What game is The International about? Well, DOTA 2, a tournament that is said to have some of the highest-earning pro gamers in the world. And, of course, the title itself appears simple but playing it is a different ball game entirely. DOTA 2 is a game that requires proactiveness and split-second decision making,

The game’s complex nature is why Blizzard Entertainment seems to own it; it was created with the company’s map builder feature as adapted from Warcraft 3, yet totally excluded from the event. So if you want to meet the baddest of the bads, The International is the ideal place to see DOTA 2 head honchos collide. The 2020 plan was to hold the esports event in Stockholm, Sweden but those plans have been modified in favor of a 2022 revival.

Fortnite World Cup

In the last 4 years or so, battle royale games have literally caused ripples in the world’s gaming landscape. Their performances have exceeded expectations because no one ever imagined that a game of this type released in 2017 would build up such a humongous fan base. Long story, Fortnite took the world by storm—and no one seems eager to outgrow the euphoria. In 2019, the World Cup’s prize pool involved over 15 million dollars, a glaring sign the event is looking to go bigger.

Whether or not you are a fan of battle royales, it is never boring to sit and watch professional Fortnite players do their thing. Plus, the game itself is designed to be highly dynamic and fast-running—making it quite ideal for big competitions. From what is obvious, players should not expect the event in the first half of next year, as the Fortnite World Cup—all things being equal—would take place in the second half of 2022.

Late last September, FIFA and Electronic Arts finally let the word out on the esports program they’ve been putting heads together for, calling it the EA SPORTS FIFA 22. This new program will gather pro-players from over 70 countries around the world to compete in FIFA, making the event sit on one of the largest competitive gaming communities ever. Featuring both the one-versus-one (1v1) and two-versus-two (2v2) contests, the gaming event will enable players, real-world football clubs, and even countries to represent themselves in a diverse set of activities.

The competitions that will be featured in EA's esports showdown are the FIFAe Nations Series 2022, the FIFAe Club Series 2022, and the EA SPORTS FIFA 22 Global Series—which, in particular, looks to become the FIFAe World Cup of 2022. All of these scintillating events will take place in the Summer of next year. Meanwhile, qualification rounds will start on November 27th, and the convention one-versus-one competitive format will be streamed as live tournaments throughout 10 regions of the world.

Additionally, over 30 leagues will be offering their esports initiatives as official partners of the EA SPORTS FIFA 22, to give fans one last chance to represent their region’s real-life clubs. Some of the leagues are Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Premier League, UEFA, MLS, CONMEBOL and the UEFA Champions League.

App Promotion Summit

Are you on the lookout for an avenue that helps you understand the ways of growing and scaling games and other mobile applications? If so, the App Promotion Summit, which will be held in Berlin in December 2022, is a surefire opportunity. Mostly, this is one of the few events that are fundamentally and religiously dedicated to the promotion of apps and mobile games, as well as how to acquire more users through both paid and non-paid—or organic UA strategies. Everything from talk shows, firesides, workshops, and panel discussions form the schedule of activities.

During the workshops—which will feature industry leaders and think tanks—participants would be able to learn the ins and outs of game and mobile app marketing, down to the user retention stage. Most of the App Promotion Summit’s activities are detailed, insights-packed, and digitally delivered. If you have questions about the gaming or mobile app landscape, there’s the chance to join panels featuring impressive line-ups of industry heavyweights you can learn tons from. Brands such as Gameloft, Playtika, Genera Game, Google, Facebook, TikTok, and Amazon will be attending.

Games Gathering

Unarguably the largest gaming event in the entire Eastern Europe, Games Gathering is sponsored by giant brands such as Ubisoft, MoonActive, Playrix, Nordcurrent, and Belka Games. Should you have a role to play in the gaming industry, however little or large, all roads ought to lead towards Odessa in December 2022. This international conference is just about the right platform to raise your professional standards by interacting one-on-one with top publishers, investors, and game service providers. In 2022, the Summer conference will be held from July 5th to 10th, in a hybrid format.

Games Gathering will host lectures wherein experienced game developers will share their experiences, comprehensions, and revelations about the most interesting things in the industry. The event will feature free booths for indie groups and offer an avenue for you to demo your gaming product by partaking in the INDIE BLAST exhibition and applying to the Indie Blast Awards contest. This event is the ideal place for heart-to-heart communication and fresh business acquaintances in the European gaming industry.

Unarguably, these are just about the gaming and esports events you want to fix into your shamelessly bottomless to-do list, whether you want to attend in-person or just stream live from the comfort of your home. Do keep tabs on them for additional details and possible changes.
